DACA

Trump's DACA decision

Earlier this week President Trump announced that he was going to repealing and replacing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that President Obama passed. This program allows for children who came to the country illegally with their parents to remain in the country and not be subjected to deportation. The Trump administration called for congress to begin efforts to come up with a replacement for the program since he was planning on repealing it. The administration cited that these immigrants are a strain on the governmental system because they are being afforded benefits and not paying taxes into the system that they are reaping these benefits from.

While the DACA decision is a questionable one that is receiving a lot of push back from political leaders and minority communities, the media is obviously pushing in one direction. The media has been consumed with John McCain's comments criticizing Trump's decision. To me this begs the question, why is the media focusing so highly on Senator McCain's comments over other political activists and leaders? The answer seems very obvious to me, the media is trying to further divide the American people. It would seem obvious that the democrats would be in opposition to Trump's decision if for no other reason than opposing the "other" party. However, for a member of GOP to come out in opposition to the President, now that's a story that the media can sell, that's juicy gossip that makes for a good headline.

By focusing on Senator McCain's comments the media is building the wall dividing the American People even higher. I am not saying that the senators comments are not relevant and should not be covered, in fact it is refreshing to see someone willing to step beyond party lines on such a controversial issue, and one that the president campaigned on. What I do have a problem with is the media focusing on Senator McCain's comments to the exclusion of other leaders who might be saying something more relevant to solving the issue at hand.

That is what the media should be doing, looking for the best alternative to the problem at hand, not simply reporting on who is on what side of the issue. The media is supposed to be the watchdog organization over the government, and by simply criticizing the presidents decision they are not doing our democratic system any favors. The media should be reporting the facts on the issue and their twisted version. Present both sides of the issue, so that the people can make the most well-informed decision they can. That is how our democracy is built, not by this division. The media should be reporting the fact that the repeal of this program will rip apart millions of families and uproot millions of people that have spent virtually their entire lives here. On the same hand they should be reporting about the amount of welfare benefits that these families receive from the government, and how little they pay into the tax system for those benefits. That's the issue, the whole issue, not the CNN or Fox News version of the issue but the issue itself.

Comments

  1. I agree that the media divideds people but I saw the media in a different light since Trump tweeted about DACA. I saw a lot of positivity and camaraderie about this topic from politicians on all sides.
